An interesting sign of the times: A Met Fresh organic store has opened at 3805 Broadway between 158th and 159th Streets (646-707-3550) in a space most recently occupied by a Payless shoe shop.
The comparatively tiny 3,2000-square-foot grocery store (the average New York City supermarket is 46,000 square feet) looks more like a glorified deli, with only four narrow aisles.
According to a worker at the register, about 80 percent of the products are organic, including fresh produce (look for the stickers that begin with a number 9), deli items like ham, and canned beans.
A quick stroll through the aisles also reveals a wide variety of products that are plant-based, dairy-free, gluten-free, salt-free and sugar-free.
Milkadamia creamer, Quorn meatless meatballs and Banza gluten-free spaghetti anyone?
