The city has rolled out the first batch of new supersize trash containers coming to West Harlem later this spring.
The so-called Empire Bins, a row of which were just installed in front of P.S./I.S. 210 on W 152nd Street, are part of a new pilot program that requires all residential properties in Community Board 9 to containerize their trash by June 1, 2025.
Buildings in the neighborhood with 31+ units will be required to use the official Empire Bins, while properties with 10-31 units will have a choice between individual and Empire bins. Buildings with 1-9 units will be able to use individual bins.

The Empire Bins will replace the large shared containers that were installed in the fall of 2023 as part of an earlier city pilot on 11 blocks in West Harlem.
Unlike the older versions that were open to anyone who walked by, the new Empire bins will be locked and accessible only to building staff and sanitation workers by special cards.

Like all Empire Bins, the newly installed containers in front of P.S./I.S. 210 on W 152nd Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway will be emptied by automated side-loading garbage trucks.
The Department of Sanitation has posted online containerization instructions for residents of Community Board 9.
